Humboldt State Student's Organize Protest Following Kyle Zoellner's Release

Taking A Stand Against Injustice

Friday May 5th, 2017, HSU students met on Arcata's plaza the evening following the release of 23-year old Zoellner. He was the suspect accused of stabbing 19-year old HSU student David Josiah Lawson at an off campus party April 15t, 2017. Josiah passed as a result of his injuries. Zoellner who is not an HSU student but a local of the town, was called to the party by his girlfriend Leila Ortega after her cellphone went missing. Zoellner was released May 5th, 2017 due to a lack of "physical evidence" after five days of preliminary hearings in a ruling by Judge Dale Reinholtsen of Eureka, CA.

Student's Co-op Arcata's Farmers Market Following Suspects Release

Raising Community Awareness

​On Saturday May 6th, 2017 HSU students took over the Arcata farmer's market which is scheduled every Saturday. Students used their voices to raise awareness of Josiah's murder and the subsequent events leading up to Zoellner's release.

Following the release of the suspect, HSU faculty and staff organized a walk out in solidarity of #JusticeForJosiah. Faculty, student organizers and staff spoke to the crowd delivering various messages.
